Local planning borough: Hounslow. This property was also in the Chiswick House conservation area and in a flood risk zone.

Project brief: The client wanted a large open plan space for entertaining, cooking and eating whilst also been able to keep a watchful eye on their two young daughters while they were playing. They also needed an additional bedroom and bathroom.

The result: A new side and rear extension was created replacing an unused area of the patio. The entire house was refurbished including a new WC cloakroom and ground floor level. Bedrooms at first floor level were reconfigured to accommodate more storage and a guest room & en-suite bathroom were created by converting the loft.

The borough’s tough conservation area policies for this road do not allow ground floor extensions to go higher than 2 meters on the boundary. This was complied with by dropping the internal floor levels by 2 steps in order to gain sufficient head room internally. The borough also does not allow the full width side return on this street so a design was created to make this into a feature rather than a problem.

Project brief: To add a side extension to the kitchen, create a utility room and a wc at ground floor level.

The result: By opening up the entire ground floor, removing all internal walls but adding in one large pocket sliding door in the middle of the new space it allowed maximum flexibility. It meant the large open plan ground floor could have different zoned uses. Living at the front, kitchen in the middle and more living at the back. We put a utility room in the existing basement by dropping the floor, tanking it and ventilating.

Project brief: The client wanted to reconfigure the kitchen and dining area whilst maintaining their quiet living room for reading and relaxing. The client also wanted to create under stairs storage, a downstairs utility room and shower room/wc.

A very contemporary and spacious kitchen design was created. Large floor to ceiling heights were maintained and light comes flooding into the property from roof lanterns, large bi-fold sliding doors as well as high level windows above the bi-folds and on the side elevation above the kitchen units. Internal floor materials were matched to external decking to keep a feeling of continuity in the design. The existing timber panels under the stairs were turned into much needed storage space for shoes and coats. The use of triple glazing helps to prevent the noise from the railway.

Project brief: To create a larger kitchen dining area as well as create a family bathroom on the return part of the kitchen. Additionally the client wanted an en-suite to the master bedroom. A general redecoration and upgrade of all electrics was also carried out as part of the project.

The result: The square footage of the house was increased significantly with spaces that could be used flexibly. The use of skylights in the return part of the kitchen maximised natural daylight deep into the plan of the house. Sliding doors on the rear elevation allowed the kitchen / dining / living area to become part of the same space as the garden in the summer. The loft conversion added a much needed extra bedroom and the bathroom extension above the kitchen allowed for a new family bathroom and the existing bathroom was converted into a master en-suite.

Project brief: To create a family house by adding an extra floor to an existing victorian coach house. Creating a new open plan ground floor living area with kitchen dinner. Create a side extension for a utility room and introduce a staircase to access all floors.

The result: A stunning oak and glass staircase positioned in one corner of the house floods the house with light. The master bedroom is very spacious on the top floor with a huge en suite bathroom. The middle floor provides 2 childrens bedrooms and a good family bathroom. The ground floor is a large open plan living dining space with a separate utility room and wc.

Project brief: The client wanted to increase the size of a very long, dark and thin kitchen and create a flexible space for dining and cooking. The client also wanted a separate laundry room away from the main kitchen and to make the area disabled compliant. The proximity to the neighbours meant that windows along the wall nearest the neighbours would cause overlooking problems.

The result: The kitchen was extended to the rear to create a large family room that was disabled compliant. A roof lantern was used to allow light in from above and large bi-fold doors were used to provide maximum light from the South West aspect of the doors as well as provide access to the huge decked area.

Project brief: This Victorian property had a small kitchen with an unused alleyway running down the side. The client wanted to increase the size of the kitchen to create a family space that would be flexible to adapt as the children grew up. The client also wanted to create a space with lots of natural light.

The result: By infilling the side return of the property a larger kitchen was created. The ground floor space was reconfigured to include an open plan seating area and kitchen. Sliding doors provide access to the garden from the kitchen and flow as one space in the summer.

Robert offers a very professional service. His vision for the space was aligned with ours, so that is why we wanted to work with him to fully renovate our house. He advised us that we could reconfigure the loft conversion under permitted development and go down the planning application route for the single story rear extension. He drew up plans, providing various different options, and was open to our suggestions for changes. Robert drew up our plans, submitted our applications and ran our tender process to select an appropriate builder. We were very happy with Robert's services.

We decided to engage Urbane to design, submit planning and arrange the tender process with builders after speaking to a number of local architects and builders. The project involves an internal redesign, extension to rear, side and loft. Robert has come up with amazing design ideas, bearing in mind our budget and focused on how we wanted to use the space. We used Urbane Designs to renovate and extend our house. From initial consultation to completion, Robert was a pleasure to work with. We'd never taken on a project like this before, but Robert was great at setting out each stage of the process, with transparent, itemised costs for each. We've used Rob Speight and Urbane Architects twice over the last 10 years. Once to do a ground floor extension and refurbishment and then once to do a loft and first floor extension.On both occasions Rob was clear and responsive in communication and thoughtful and adaptable in design. We certainly wouldn't have used Urbane a second time if they had not done a good job the first time round (and we did encounter problems with some of our contractors first time). Recommended.

Urbane Design Architects are a wonderful team to work with. Over the course of 18 months they supported us with feasibility, planning permission, tendering the job, building control approval and contract administration with the builder. We had a great experience with Urbane Design Architects and their team when we recently extended and reconfigured the ground floor of our Georgian terraced house in Chiswick W4. Robert Speight was our project architect. He listened to our brief but then made us consider some alternative, exciting ways of thinking about the spaces and materials. He combined his experience of local planning policies, working relationships with local suppliers and our budget to deliver a new home that we are in love with! When we were going through planning permissions and the tender process, the team walked us through all the requirements step by step with us, which was great. Very highly recommended and sensibley priced!
