SIDE RETURNS
Side return extensions at the rear of a house allow us to develop areas of our homes that are often not used to the side of the kitchen and at the back of terraced houses.
The main advantage of building a side return is the valuable extra width gained for contemporary modern living and dining areas. This type of home development will dramatically change the feel of the room when it features Velux windows running along the roof or roof lanterns and bi-fold doors which bring light flooding into the space. A side extension can transform a dark space into an open plan light filled space.
A side return extension normally adds a relatively small amount of extra volume to the house. Therefore they are often developed within a home owner’s permitted development rights. This often results in side return projects not requiring full planning consent, which results in a quicker approval process. There is also a financial saving in fees payable to the planning department.
The nature of these projects will almost always require a party wall notice to be served to your neighbour because of the type of work you are doing. Urbane Design Architects would be happy to discuss your project for no initial charge.
